potentially profitable writing contest

Here’s an interesting thing that crossed my desk and I’m not sure what my opinion of it is. A writing contest where the first prize is potentially $10,000. IF there are 1,000 applicants. And the entry fee is $25. For 500 words.

The contest is sponsored by The Writing Coach

What’s the assignment? 500 words (or less) beginning with the sentence She sat on her suitcase waiting for a taxi.

The sponsor says she has 20 years experience in freelance writing and five years in coaching, and claims that she’s doing this so that a writer can have the money to finish that novel. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but this also seems like a borderline brilliant way for the sponsor to market themselves, earn some money, and spread the word about their services. Hmmm….I’m still not sure how I feel about this, but I know plenty of people who could stand to make some money on both sides of this idea. As a sponsor to a contest, and as a winning writer.
