Guidebook Writers’ Blogs

This weekend Arthur Frommer wrote about verteran guidebook writers turning to blogs. I found it in the San Francisco Chronicle Travel section

“Guidebook writers’ blogs get you the picture quicker”

The blogs that were mentioned were:
M. Timothy O’Keefe’s GuidetoCaribbeanVacations.com and Tom Brosnahan’s TurkeyTravelPlanner.com

I find the latter hard on the eyes, but those who’ve been to Turkey can review the content. But still, those scattered bold words are awful.

In fact, I don’t think either of them really look like a blog, or read like a blog because the content isn’t structured by date. Maybe I don’t understand the new definition of a blog. What is a weblog? Here’s a page that gives a definition I understand.

“As a format and content approach for a Web site, the weblog seems popular because the viewer knows that something changes every day, there is a personal (rather than bland commercial) point-of-view, and, on some sites, there is an opportunity to collaborate or respond with the Web site and its participants.”

Hmmm…I don’t think the sites mentioned adhere to this. Is the famous Arthur Frommer out of touch? Try BaliBlog.com Art. Now there’s a destination travel blog. Daily news, with tons of categorized travel resources.

I took a quick look at that Turkey Travel Planner…while there’s some useful information, I don’t see how in any way it’s really a blog as we understand them. I’d say Frommer IS out of touch! Maybe a letter to the editor is in order?

Laura…thank you! You must be referring to the above comment from my all-time most wanted agent!

Somebody please tell Tara Weaver. She’ll get a kick out of that.
