Submitting to the NYT Travel Section

We’ve recently had an interesting discussion about the Travel section at the New York Times. I appreciate those of you who read it regularly and chimed in to give your take.

When I emailed them for writers guidlines, they were quick to get back to me. I have attached them here. Good luck!

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THE NEW YORK TIMES TRAVEL SECTION

Send proposals and manuscripts to travelmail@nytimes.com. The mailing address is: Travel Editor, The New York Times, 229 West 43rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10036 PLEASE DO NOT SEND PHOTOS.
The Travel Section will not publish articles that grow out of trips paid for or in any way subsidized by an airline, hotel, tourist board or other organization with an interest, direct or indirect, in the subject of an article.
We buy all rights to articles and will not purchase a piece that has been published elsewhere. The date of the trip on which an article or query is based should be given on a separate line at the top of the manuscript. A brief resume should accompany both articles and proposals. No submission should exceed 1,500 words. Backpage essays should be between 1,200 and 1,400 words.
Story proposals must be submitted in writing; we are not able to handle telephone queries. A few paragraphs describing the article you have in mind and some clips of your previous work will suffice.
The writer will be notified ONLY if a piece or proposal is accepted. This can take several weeks, because of the volume of unsolicited material we receive.
