Going Wireless: A Valiant Attempt to Leave the Stone Age

The most difficult part about being a home-hopper is transitioning to new computer set ups. In Belgium I didn’t have Word and internet access on the same computer. In London, I couldn’t download my pics. In San Francisco it’s a slow ordeal with dial up. And in San Diego it is somehow an even slower dial up situation.

I’ve been trying all weekend to get my internet system up to par. With only AOL to laugh at in the home, I went out and bought an Airport card for the Ancient IBook. (Clamshell version). I found some free Wireless hotspots on JiWire.com and I’ve spent the past few days driving around to see if they work. They did for about fifteen minutes on my test run. Today, it was useless. Naturally that’s the case when you don’t have time for mishaps. But I think I might’ve done enough tinkering to get it to work tomorrow afternoon.

I’m trying to avoid buying T-Mobile. If I can just get the computer to cooperate with the free signals, it’ll work. As soon as it does I’m going to call Jim Benning at World Hum and tell him we need to “take a meeting”. That’s cave talk for coffee in Little Italy. Would you believe their whole neighborhood is wireless? It’s very cool. For you San Diego lovers, the Golden Hills area is also wired up for free.

And now, just because I went to get you the link, I found out the Mac glitch that was keeping me from the connection this afternoon. I think…I’ll check it out. YAY!
