The New Yorker: Vacations from Hell

I bought The New Yorker Summer Fiction Issue yesterday. It had a section called “Vacations From Hell,” and the main reason for getting it was to read Susan Orlean’s story. She’s an author I’ve always thought I could learn from, so this was a good time to start. (There are also stories from T. Coraghessan Boyle, Charles D’ Ambrosio, Junot Diaz, and Zadie Smith).

So wasn’t it interesting when I opened my WorkForWriters Digest today and saw that there was a link to this story:
“New Yorker Fiction, by the Numbers” By David Carr.

In the article, Katherine L. Milkman, a 22 year-old student in the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton, read 442 stories printed in The New Yorker from Oct. 5, 1992, to Sept. 17, 2001 to research her senior thesis.

Carr said, “one main conclusion was that male editors generally publish male authors who write about male characters who are supported by female characters.”

Isn’t that interesting since I just bought it for a woman author.
