I saw Cameron Crowe’s Elizabethtown this past weekend. I thought it was good, but not blow me away great like Almost Famous, or Zach Braff’s Garden State by . Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not harshing E-town…the beau thought it was fantastic.
But the reason I wanted to talk about it was the road trip sequence in the end. That was my favorite part. I’ve driven some of the same roads that Orlando Bloom’s character did, and it was a nice reminder about how good it feels to drive across country. I don’t want to give anything away, but the map that he used was the coolest thing ever. I left thinking, how come I’ve never given someone something like that? I’d like to think that I can be that creative, but I also know that it would take SO much time. And the energy…sheesh!

There was another aspect of the movie related to travel that I could chew on…unrequited trips. Kinda like love, but in the travel sense. Trips you’ve always wanted to go on with someone, but never have. Why is that? Are there any trips that you’ve always wanted to take with your father, sister, brother, friend…anybody?
This is not a call for Leif to write me and ask me again to do Amazing Race with him…no, that’s not why I’m bringing it up. But it’s definitely something to think about. I think I’ve always wanted to go to Nepal with James and Larry and Raj of Travelers’ Tales. But who knows if we ever will because of kids and jobs. Other than that, I haven’t really dreamed of travel with other people. I wanted to go on an African safari for my honeymoon…had always thought about that…but that’s not going to happen.
I don’t know. Just chew on it, see Elizabethtown, and see what kind of things stir in you about life. There is plenty there to inspire a good think.
