So Many Travel Websites to Write For…..

By Jen Leo | Permalink | 6 comments | November 3rd, 2005 | Trackback

Travel Travel Travel. Writing Writing Writing. We do them together, we do them separately, and right now I’ve got both of them staring me in the face each morning. I’m on a quick break from the book tour, and I don’t leave town again for a week and a half, but it is impossible for a travel writer to stop thinking about our world.

Here are some travel websites that have recently crossed my desk and are looking for writers. As with any assignment, make sure you know the details of the contract and be OK with whatever you get into ahead of time. There are advantages to exposing your writing without pay, but many people aren’t comfortable. Just know what you’re getting into before you spam them with submisisons from your latest greatest adventure.

Tango Diva
Tango Diva, is a slick site that’s all about women’s solo travel. They are currently seeking contributions from travelers about their international or domestic experiences on the road. Accounts of solo travel are strongly encouraged, but any good travel story will be considered. A bit of backstory…the site was founded by Teresa Rodriguez Williamson who ditched working for Richard Simmons when she fell in love with an Aussie. She followed him to the land Down Under but only ended up with a heartache. Travel soothed her soul, brought her new confidence, and great career opportunities. All of this leading up to Tango Diva. I think this website is cool, and I look forward to spending more time on it. Especially to take the quiz! I have to see if my Lattitude matches my attitude.

FLUENT
Another well designed online mag is Fluent. It was started by a bunch of travel lovers who write prose, poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction inspired by travel. They’re looking for great writing and photos. They are especially in need of filling out their journal pages section to be called “Raw,” which will feature journal pages as-is (scanned). That is SO cool. Here are their submission guidelines. But don’t stress a big main article…check out what they have to say about submissions…

“It might be a chunk of prose that you thought was of no interest to anyone but you, or an offbeat story that didn’t even happen, triggered by some weird guy on an overnight train. Don’t worry about including the name of the hotel and the price of cab fare. Fluent wants to expose the wild ideas, ramblings, core thoughts, and raw words that travel brought out of you.”

J3tlag
I’m a sucker for graphics, and here is another slick travel website. It seems to be a collaboration of several names in the travel biz you’ve already heard of. John Rambow, a Fodor’s editor who’s now co-eding Jaunted, Johnny Jet, FlavorPill, Jet Set Lara, and many more.
Go here to submit your story. I’m in shock that I haven’t heard of Josh Spear, what kind of cave have I been living in?! He and I need to meet.

Faxts
This site is brand new, as in just started in September. They are currently getting their stories from aggregators but would like to establish a network of contributors who would submit articles, blogs, photographs and their expertise ( or sheer enthusiasm ) to the site. You can tell the site is in it’s infancy, but the plus side is that they consider them a travel and life website, so that increases the amount of subjects you can write for. If you’re looking to get in on a travel website from the ground up, here’s one to check out.

Looking for a new and exciting destination in which to get married but need not be expensive? Want a beach, sunshine and an English speaking location but don’t want to travel miles away? Want your closest friends and family to attend your Big Day without burdening them with the huge cost (and embarrassment) of travelling transatlantic?

Then consider getting married in Gibraltar, just a short 2 and half hour flight from the UK and with year round sunshine, a choice of up to five beaches and being a duty-free tax haven, Gibraltar is fast entering the top ten bracket of favourite places in the world in which to get hitched! Unlike the Caribbean, it is not expensive and unlike Las Vegas, it is not crass!

You can get married in Gibraltar within 24 hours of arrival without the residency requirements of other countries. Apart from the traditional registry office or church, you can get married al-fresco in a picturesque Italian garden with fountains and a magical backdrop of a waterfall and tropical flowers or even on a rose bedecked terrace overlooking the blue azures of the Mediterranean.

Extremely competitively priced flight and hotel packages are available by booking online at www.mygibraltar.co.uk who also offer a fabulous one-stop Wedding service where they even match the colour of the bridal bouquet to the colour of the dress! You even get a £5.00 per person discount and free night offers when you book online!

Famous celebrities who have chosen the lush backdrop of palms and fountains in Gibraltar for their Wedding Day have included John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Sean Connery (married twice here!) and Roger Moore. Further 007 connections include the filming of ‘Living Daylights’ starring Timothy Dalton on The Rock itself.
