Journalism and Facebook

So who’s not part of frightening Facebook yet?

I’m the last to endorse networking communities, but Facebook is an exception.

With 31 million users from every corner of the world, if you are not on it you are not only missing a huge networking opportunity, but also the opportunity to showcase some of your work.

How exactly? you ask - check out this article by Poynter that will explain just that.

Also, Poynter Online recently formed a ‘Journalists and Facebook‘ group. They invited 25 journalists to be part of it, and threw out some discussion topics. That got them 1200 members in about 10 days. Their forums have interesting topics and in-depth discussions on things like pitching, useful resources for writers, networking tips etc, certainly worth checking out.

The scariest thing about Facebook was that I allowed it to access my yahoo address book and invite everyone on it to join. Talk about viral!

I kind of like that the interface is a bit more conventional and austere than MySpace’s.
