Alternative Agent Hunting

Another way of looking for an agent is to research the successful books that are similar to what you are pitching. Go to the acknowledgements page and see if they thanked their agent. Often they do. After getting that name you can research the agent through the proper channels.

Another way is to go to the publishing house that you're trying to get in with and ask someone on the editorial staff which agents they like working with.

I will be doing this next week from a lead I got at BEA. Why am I waiting? The sales rep suggested it. They have been slammed with back to back trade shows, and if you've ever done one, you know that the following week is a struggle to get out of the backlog and into the norm.

The Ted Weinstein agency (http://www.twliterary.com/) has regular get togethers in SF which might be of assistance. You sign up for their mailing list and they send info about upcoming events. It's a chance to pick their brains if nothing else.
